I'm sorry, but I'm currently far away from my access to Usenet. I'll be back
sometime in the evening of friday, 23.7.
(To dudes at the Gravis lists: Feel free to drop me out if this reply annoys
you too much, :) ).

Now that the docs for ultramid are out, could the author of MEGAEM write a
modified version of MEGAEM that uses ULTRAMID.
It would be much easier tha figuring out "ultraclick removal" and other
techniques. I know that ULTRAMID requires something like 60k to load, but
some lucky people (like me) can LOADHIGH it with QEMM, so that's no problem.
It would be nice to have GM emulation in stereo.

To other gus users,
I can't help those people more (because i don't know the solve) but
perhaps some other people can so please reply to the next msg to the
right persons,
Hi Phil,
In your letter to the gus digest:

lacking of the NMI procedure on the SBOS prg.. BUT... my puter (a DX2-66
on a VLFSD [?] v1.0 board, Intel chips) was running a-O.K. with SBOS,
UNTIL.. about a few days ago, it suddenly gave me the NMI error, and I am
really upset!
I did not install a thing, nor did I mess with my motherboard, open the
CPU case, or screw with CMOS.. I powered it on one day and SBOS just
didn't work. ..."
You mentioned how you called a techian and told you that it
never worked in the first place. He must have been referring
to that a problem under dos can be not harmful at one moment
and at another moment be harmful. It's the same with your
interrupt setting who might be conflict full(especially when 2
things are on one interupt, like modems and sound blaster),
but works with dos and then os/2 doesn't works or gives errors.
(a hidden problem thus)
Know Nmi .... I know (also from digest and other sources) that
SBOS tries to get hooked to the NMI (the ONLY NMI interupt in
the computer is IRQ 0 ! which is been used by the memory ...).
Irq0 is used to fresh up the Dynamic RAM. For a reason me not
known, the gravis / Ford programmers find it usefull or so to
hook up SBOS to IRQ 0 (the told the had to use it, because it
HAS to intercept, in all circumstances, the computer to
emulate SB).
I had this a few times in a OS/2 DOS box (The NMI procedure on
this P.C. is disabled.) and so on i assume os/2 get a hold of
that too (it only accured when i ran 2 dos box'en with sbos or
when i closed a dos box with sbos on and then opened it and
tried to run sbos).
It can have to do with your memory manager (qemm, emm, max),
but it works fine by me with qemm and emm or neither. Also i
don't have a dx2 or VLB (you said VLFSD v1.0, but i think you
mean Vesa Local Bus (no you mean VLSI chips ? if so .. VLSI
are large Scale chips with much transitors).
As far as i know the message has nothing to do with cpu/open
computer/or cmos. One thing you could check: Do you have the
I/o bus TO fast, i mean stand it on 8MHZ (some card don't like
to fast i/o card .. i don't think it is the solve, but who
knows).
Sorry for the long letter, but i hope you understand more of
it know. Also sorry for not having a direct answer to the
problem. Best try to get the computer booted with NO drivers
in config.sys/autoexec.bat except RIGHT set parameters.
Also it's not an motherboard mail function (i suppose).
Thanks,
Thomas

I have recently built the midi connector describedin the faq, works great
btw. Now that I have a midi in device I'm keen on trying out the
sequencer type software that is floating around.
I've been trying to get WinJammer Hto work and been very frustrated by the
interface. When I want to record a track (start a new song) I am able
to fill in the tracktitle, instrument etc by clicking on the appropriate
space in the track row. But, when I come to choosing a channel or patch
for that channel,I can't do it. I click, press enter you name it I can't
change the value of the channel or patch field from the default 'none'
value. I've even resorted to loading in a midi file and overwriting the
fields (which I am able to do)but then I don't seem to be able to actually
record anthing from my midi in.
I know that the midi in cable worksince I've usedit with other programs.
I have configured Winjammer to output to the Midi mapper and get input
from the midi input port(I think that's what it was called). I just can't
get this program to work. If anyone out there can tell "press
this button" I would appreciate the help. Winjammer looks like it might
be useful but I can't even getit to work!!!

I can't get the sc2_demo to do anything; it hangs before any graphics are
displayed, or any music sounded. I've tried booting clean (only himem.sys
+ GUS setup stuff in config.sys and autoexec.bat; I probably even tried it
without himem.sys) with and without SBOS installed
NOTE: All other software I've thrown at my setup has run flawlessly (the
various utilities on the Gravis install disks, crystal demo 2, Strike
Commander using SBOS, etc)
Setup:
GUS w/ 1MB of memory (ULTRASND=220,1,1,12,5)
486/33 w/ 16MB ram (Chicony MB, AMI BIOS)
Orchid Farenheit 1280+
Adaptec 1542c SCSI (IRQ 11)
Telepath modem (com2, IRQ 3)
Logitech Trackman (com1, IRQ 4)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
Tony Acero

Ok, this is just a thought for anyone writing midi players for windows. How
about loading the midi file and then setting the number of voices to the number
required by the midi file... In that way a song with 6 tracks will get the
maximum of 14 voices 44khz, if the song has more than 14 tracks then only can
the number of voices be reduced. When the song is finished is sets the number
of active voices back to the original setting... Any further comments or
ideas ?
One more thing - someone wrote in a digest a few days ago that he saw Strike
Commander working in the Gravis's Demo room and he said it was not SBOS. Ok my
question is - it says that the AIL drivers do not work with SC, is GRAVIS going
to release the drivers that does work with the game ?

Robert Lee DeRaud wrote about getting different results with .MID
files depending on which player he was using. I've noticed this myself.
I thought I was just hearing things until I tried the file jump.mid
which is quite a good version of Van Halen's Jump. Playmidi snapped
crackled and popped. Media Player played a very flat sounding version
and I thought "this isn't such a great Midi file". Then I tried
WinJammer's Player and was very impressed. I loaded up Patchman to
see what was going on. Media Player only loaded about 7 melodic patches
(and not all the right ones) where WinJammer loaded all the proper patches.
Why?
By the way, thanks to whoever uploaded Metal.zip to the FTP site. I've had a
great time playing around with your patches, and hopefully I'll have some
good grungy Neil Young .mid files headed your way. Also, the patches from
IWANNACUDANCE were a blast. I'm glad to see, also, that the conversation
in the digest has gotten away from whining. It's good to see the musical
side of the GUS being explored more deeply in this forum.
